For Roger Hodgson's fourth visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina the chosen venue was the Lawn Tennis Club.
Unlike the previous shows at the Gran Rex, this one was outdoors but luckily the night was beautiful and so was Roger's concert.
This time around there were other lucky cities in Argentina: Rosario, Córdoba and Mendoza enjoyed Roger's music too.
The fun started early when I was invited along with other fans to attend Roger's soundcheck.
It all started with us being greeted by Roger when we sang to him "Give a little bit" while Roger listened.
I even got corrected by Roger when I messed the lyrics to the second verse!
After this amazing experience we got to attend the soundcheck.
Needless to say, it was a great experience and we got to hear Roger perform a song that was absent from the main show, the beautiful "The More I Look".
After saying hello to Howard, Roger's sound engineer who's a very nice -and tall- guy, we left and returned on the evening for the main show.
After the usual opening with "Take The Long Way Home", we were treated to a faultless set of Supertramp and solo hits and favorites.
As nice as his solo sets with Aaron McDonald, multiinstrumentalist virtuoso were, it's so much better to hear Roger surrounded by a full, competent band who reproduce with great talent the sound achieved in the studio by Roger.
Aaron McDonald (saxophone and other instruments), Bryan Head (drums), Kevin Adamson (keyboards) and David Carpenter (bass) comprise an amazing band doing a great job at backing Roger.
The solo hit "In Jeopardy", from the succesful 1984 solo debut "In The Eye Of The Storm" made a surprise appearance on the setlist, and a welcomed one also. The song reached a big success when released in Argentina.
Fron the same album, the lovely "Lovers In The Wind" is always a joy to hear live, and the same can be said of any song Roger performs on the piano.
Another surprise solo song appearance was "Death And A Zoo" from Roger's last studio album to date, "Open The Door".
During the performance, Roger bangs a snaredrum creating an intense wall of sound with the band.
All Supertramp songs were performed faithful to the original arrangements.
A great moment happened when before singing "Dreamer", Roger asked people to stand up and get closer to the stage.
The -up to the point- polite and shy audience rushed near the stage and sang along and cheered for the rest of the concert.
Roger made a mention that he wished to return to Buenos Aires and spend a few days here to explore and made a point of how nice and warm people treated him here.
I couldn't point a highlight of the show because all performances were highlights but it's always a pleasure to listen to songs that reach deep in your heart like "Hide In Your Shell" or "The Logical Song".
Wheter Roger was on the keyboard, piano of guitar, his incredible voice still shines through.
When after the show I had the pleasure of exchanging a few words with him, I asked him how is it that after around 40 years he can still reach those high notes and no changes are to be found on his voice.
His response was, pointing to his chest "always sing from your heart".
A sincere thank you to Linda Tyler, Roger's tour manager for being an extremely nice and beautiful person.
Another thank you to Nicolas, you rock, mate!
